Some Green Tea Goodness

Life has been crazy roller coaster ride for me for last few days! Traveling, work pressure, sleep deficit and not so regular meals. With the festivities approaching, starting with Karwachauth just around the corner, then Diwali and more, I certainly want to look my best.

When it comes to looking and feeling good after chronic exhaustion, here’s nothing better than going for a holistic approach for the same, something like an overall detoxification of the body.

I have never been a tea or a coffee person, and have been hooked to green tea for couple of years now. Any given day, I am consuming at least 3 mugs of green tea. Considering all the benefits of green tea, it also seems like a good habit! I practically wake up sipping on my green tea and go off to bed at night with one!

So for detox too, I rely on my green tea!

Now before a lot of you go ‘ohh, yuck, it tastes bad, I can’t have it’ and stop reading this any further, let me tell you about Tetley Green Tea. The October issue of Harvard Women’s Health Watch recognizes that the healthy power and benefits of green tea are largely due to its high content of flavonoids — plant-derived compounds that are antioxidants which cleanses your body off all toxins.

It further mentions that green tea is the best food source of a group called catechins. In test tubes, catechins are more powerful than vitamins C and E in halting oxidative damage to cells and appear to have other disease-fighting properties. Studies have found an association between consuming green tea and a reduced risk for several cancers, including, skin, breast, lung, colon, esophageal, and bladder.

Additional benefits for regular consumers of green and black teas include a reduced risk for heart disease. The antioxidants in green, black, and oolong teas can help block the oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol, increase HDL (good) cholesterol and improve artery function.

Being a public health professional (ok, so what I have quit my job recently, I still know my stuff..haha), I can’t help but state facts here!

Now about the weight gain thanks to my vacation, plus with Diwali coming, which means more food, green tea for rescue again! The polyphenol found in green tea works to intensify levels of fat oxidation and the rate at which your body turns food into calories. Hence, it helps you not gain weight that quick thanks to its fat burning properties.

WebMD quotes “All things being equal, if you sub 1-2 cups of green tea for one can of soda, over the next year you’d save over 50,000 calories,” Ochner says. That’s more than 15 pounds. Just don’t swamp it with honey or sugar!”

Further, as far as stress is concerned,  green tea also has a relaxing and tranquilizing effect which help to de-stress.

Obviously, we can’t ignore its beauty benefits. Green tea can apparently also help with wrinkles and the signs of aging, because of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps you to recover from not just sun damage, but by cleansing and detoxifying your body, it gradually helps to take care of break outs too!

Now that you know all these benefits of green tea and how it is perfect to detox your body around festivities, you must start drinking some!

Further, besides just green tea itself, the used green tea bags too do wonders for personal grooming and beauty.

Quick DIY beauty tips with green tea:

  1. Rubbing used green tea bags on your skin can help reduce stretch marks.
  2. Used green tea bags also help to reduce dark circles and puffiness under eyes. Just take used green tea bags, put them in refrigerator for few hours, take them out put them on your eyes for 15-20 minutes. Do this frequently and you’ll notice the difference.
  3. You can also make green tea face packs. Dry the used green tea bags and then use the dried green tea leaves and add some cucumber juice and apply on your face, this helps in tightening pores.
  4. Another face pack option is, dried green tea leaves with milk and oatmeal, which on frequent usage gives soft supple and younger looking skin. Green tea leaves with neem powder further helps beat acne.
  5. Green tea steam facial – regular way to use steam for your face to open up pores, just add green tea leaves to it, which has anti-oxidants and anti-bacterial properties.

So don’t throw away those used green tea bags, use them for better looking skin and eyes.

I am totally sticking to my green tea regime and detoxifying my body. I am also planning to try some more DIY face packs and beauty options to look good this festive season!
