Blast from the past

The 80s trends make a comeback

As I flip the pages of magazines such as Vogue, Cosmo, Glamour or any other, I get a feeling of being back in the 80’s. I get the same feeling while am watching the very popular TV show ‘Friends’ looking at Rachel’s or Monica’s outfits specially.

Every time I look at my mom’s old pics, her in boxy tops or midi-skirts, I go like “Woah ! This is what is in vogue now !”

Pieces such as midi-skirt, overalls, platform shoes and more have made a comeback and how ?

From Givenchy to Kenzo, everyone’s wearing the blast from the past.

My favourite five Β 80s trends that have made a comeback are:

1) Denim Jackets:Β Sleeveless or full sleeved, denim jackets are one of the most versatile pieces to have in your closet. While Madonna rocked one of this popular 80s trends in the 80s, we have Miranda Kerr to Jessica Alba doing the same now. From denims to maxi dresses, these go well with almost anything to everything !

2) Scrunchies/ Headbands/ Turbans: Hair accessories, big ones and bright ones !

3) Wayfarers: Wayfarers are one of the most iconic style for a pair of sunglasses. They were popular among the young and stylish back in 80’s as much as they are now. Remember Tom Cruise sporting these classics in ‘Risky Business’ in 1983 ?

4) Neon: Pop coloured prints on tee-shirts, bright stockings and brighter accessories were a big big thing in the 80’s. The neon trend is back with a bang. Neon statement jewellery, handbags, accessories to even for dresses with bright graphic prints, go pop !

5) Overalls: Overalls or dungarees were pretty popular then, not just for women but also men. These are back in fashion and no street-style section of any magazine/ fashion website is complete unless someone wearing overalls is featured. I don’t have a pair currently but am looking for a perfect pair of overalls for myself !

There are other more such pieces which took a time travel to the current times such as Platform Footwear, Ankle Boots, Chokers, Jelly Shoes, Crop Tops and more.

Now I have used some of these elements from above to create two different looks (one feminine while the other bit edgy) of the same outfit here for a little inspiration on how we can probably use these:

Look 1:Β

Added a 80’s trend inspired head band and pop of bright pink to my otherwise usual skirt and crop-top combo here.

Look 2:

For an edgier look, the headband goes off and enter my Clubmasters. Added a sleeveless denim jacket (my current obsession) and buckled ankle boots replacing the heels.

I’ve been thinking that too, and I feel like all through discovering my style, it’s always kind of been stuck in the nineties! πŸ™‚ I wish my mother had kept safe some of her clothes and accessories, would have pilfered and worn it all the time… Love how you pull off both looks, but my favourite’s the one with the denim jacket… Grunge musician types! (P.S. I love that crop top, been eyeing it at Forever 21 but haven’t bought it yet.) // Also, wishing I had held on to my eighth grade dungarees, hehe, I’m still the same height and body type so guessing it could have fit me. Oh, well.

My mother has been quite a fashionista in her youth and she always tells me about all the trends that keep on making a come-back. At times, I have been known to recycle her old jari- blouses as jackets. Somethings are totally worth a steal form yesteryear’s closets.
